The Glendale neighborhood is situated in the southern part of Ewing Township, NJ just off route 31 and along the Trenton city line. The Glendale story begins in the late 1930s at a time when the national was finally pulling itself out of the Great Depression. With a new General Motors plant, a municipal airport and one of the state's major colleges within its borders, Ewing was growing as people from the city of Trenton began to move outward and suburbs were being developed. J.C. McCarthy, an enterprising developer, purchased a tract just across the border from the capital city and offered "Custom Built Precision-Built" homes on what was once farmland. Of no small historic significance is the fact that the new neighborhood was bounded on one side by one of the routes travelled by Washington's army on that fateful night as the marched toward their victory at Trenton after crossing the Delaware.
The homes were well built with the best materials and each one was custom built to the new owner's specifications. As a result, each home in the neighborhood is unique. Even homes that share the same basic design feature elements in their interiors which make them interesting and different. Glendale continued to grow throughout the 1940s and into the 1950s as additional streets were developed and by 1955 the neighborhood had reached its current state, with its cozy atmosphere and beautiful trees.
The Glendale Civic Association was founded in 1938 and continues to this day as an organization that brings the neighborhood together for parties and events each month and with meetings that let members share their concerns and ideas. From the welcoming brunch at the beginning of each year to the back yard movie nights, neighborhood parties and trips to the ballpark to cheer on our local team, the organization helps to keep Glendale vibrant and everyone in touch. Our Facebook page is a very active one, with neighbors posting their birthdays, vacation pictures, notices of lost dogs and concerns about things happening around Glendale. Glendale is known around Ewing Township as one of the friendliest and most active neighborhoods in town. People who live here are constantly involved in community events and many of us are accomplished artists, educators, musicians and writers who can frequently be seen at the many musical and theatrical events that the Ewing area offers, especially at the nearby College of New Jersey. Glendale is more than just an inclusive neighborhood. It's an experience in friendly living that is hard to match in today's world.
